Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (February 4, 2013) – Direct Energy and PA Media Group are proud to announce the launch of the second annual Harrisburg Volunteer Citizen of the Year award. Nominations are now being accepted through Sunday, March 24th, 2013.

The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award program recognizes the significant efforts of individuals who make their communities a better place to live. The award itself consists of:

First introduced in Alberta, Canada in 2005, the Volunteer Citizen of the Year award has been honoring volunteerism for eight successful years. Direct Energy has expanded its Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award program to the United States in Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton. Last year, in its inaugural year in Harrisburg, the program honored Nancy Chavez of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania for her dedication to the fight against domestic violence.

"We are thrilled to have the opportunity to once again join hands with PennLive and The Patriot-News of the PA Media Group to bring this wonderful award program to Pennsylvania's capital," said Sayed Khoja, Commercial Director for Direct Energy. "We received so many impressive nominations last year and we look forward to receiving more and above all, honoring our second winner."

The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award is open to all residents of communities in the PennLive and The Patriot-News market areas. Individuals can either nominate themselves or be nominated by another individual or group. Nominations should be no longer than 750 words and must detail the specific contributions the individual or group has made to improve the community through volunteer service. The nomination must also profile the designated organization and how it would use the $5,000 donation from Direct Energy.

"We were blown away with admirable stories of the unsung heroes in our Harrisburg communities last year," said John Kirkpatrick, President of PA Media Group, a digitally-focused news and information company that publishes and operates the Pulitzer Prize-winning Patriot-News, the 24/7 PennLive news website, and a growing suite of print and digital products. "Their devotion to our communities is remarkable, and this program is an excellent way to help showcase and appreciate these selfless volunteers for their many efforts and wonderful contributions."

Nominations must be submitted by Sunday, March 24th, 2013 at 11:59 pm EST. A selection committee from Direct Energy, PennLive and The Patriot-News will review the submissions, and the winner will be announced in April.
